I agree with aeperezt - backup is the best option to protect your data. Installation of Fedora (same as installation of any other operating system) can easily damage your existing data on the disk especially during the disk partitioning. It it prefferable to have the data backed up on some external drive.
Alternatively you might decide to buy new disk. Common you deserve bigger and faster disk anyway :). Put the old disk aside with existing data and operating system, equip it with external case conectable via USB. Then you can istall Fedora to the new disk and not worry about the data. After installation you will copy back from USB what you need.

Well a backup is works best, there is no magic trick on keeping your files, on a system install there is always a chance you screw it up. I you have drive partition that want to keep as ntfs where you files are, telling Fedora installation not to use that partition should be enough but make a backup.
