Hey there,

I'm new to Fedora. Until now, I used Linux Mint 12 and made my experiences with Linux systems. So I'm not a complete newbie.

My question now is: I want to install Fedora 17 KDE on my PC (Intel Dualcore E5200, NVidia GeForce 9600GS, 4GB Ram..) and have read that there are problems with the multimedia codecs. In LM, there were the Codecs just installed, so I wanted to know, where i can get the codecs? Another question is, whether there is an alternative for iTunes in Fedora? I know Clementine, but i couldn't synchronize my iPod...

I'm very enthusiastic with Fedora, so it would be nice, if there is anyone, who can help me.

rpmfusion.org is a third party repository containing non free (yet distributable) and free (but not distributable by Fedora, due to patents or other problems) packages.

Go here and follow the instrunctions to install the free and non-free repositories.

And then. There is no such thing as "the codecs". Different programs use different multimedia frameworks. Gnome programs use "gstreamer" usually, so you have to install packages named such as: gstreamer-plugins-something. Other programs use other naming conventions.

Fortunately, some programs are capable of detecting what codec is missing and tell PackageKit to find the codec in the available repositories. Totem (the gnome video player) is capable of doing exactly this.

+1 to this solution. I trust rpmfusion to play nice with the rest of the system. I can't say the same about whatever fedorautils does.

You can use Fedora Utils to install codecs. To install fedorautils, run the following,

su -c "curl http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/satya164:/fedorautils/Fedora_17/home:satya164:fedorautils.repo -o /etc/yum.repos.d/fedorautils.repo && yum install fedorautils"
su -c "curl http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/satya164:/zenity/Fedora_17/home:satya164:zenity.repo -o /etc/yum.repos.d/zenity.repo && yum update zenity"

Then launch Fedora Utils from the menu and you have options to install codecs under "Essential Tweaks & Tasks"

If you’ve installed/upgraded to Fedora and you would like to play your media files (music and videos), this is the current way to go:

Add RPM Fusion repository then install codecs:

$ su -
Password:
# yum install gstreamer1-libav gstreamer1-plugins-ugly

For some reason the Totem’s auto-search function is now broken, so you have to do it manually. I suspect the reason is that the package names have changed (compared to Fedora 17 and earlier).

Of course all of this only applies to citizens of those countries where software patents are not valid. Otherwise this action would probably be illegal and you might receive a capital punishment or similar.
