I am having trouble with my built-in radeon HD8790M card and want to disable it completely. I tried to blacklist it, but that makes no difference whatsoever.
Any way to completely disable the driver and boot with VESA for all I care.
Although this applies to the nouveau driver, the process should be the same to disable the radeon driver - adjust the driver name as necessary.
Have you filed a bug report?
Add nomodeset to the kernel command line in grub. Then create /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/vesa.conf with the following contents:
Section "Device"
Identifier "Card1"
Driver "vesa"
