Are you trying to share your desktop or run a separate login session and share that?

If you are trying to share your desktop, then try installing vino (if using Gnome) or krfb (if using KDE). Once installed, you should have an option in your program menus for either "Remote Desktop" or "Desktop sharing". Open this and the configuration should be straightforward.
