I have been trying to install Fedora 17 (Fedora-17-x86_64-DVD.iso) in virtual box but it gets stuck right after selecting "Install or upgrade Fedora"

The boot options are

vmlinuz initrd=initrd.img root=live:CDLABEL=Fedora\x2017\x20x86_64

the boot process gets stuck after loading
input: VirtualBox USB Tables as /devices/pci0000:00/0000.00:06.0/usb2/2-1/2-1:1.0/input/input4
generic-usb 0003:80EE:0021.0001: input,hidraw0: USB HID v1.10 Mouse [VirtualBox USB Tablet] on usb-0000:00:06.0-1/input0

I have tried other images like Fedora-17-i686-Live-Desktop.iso with same results.

My hardware is Asus P8Z77-V Deluxe, Core i7 3770K, GSkill 32GB, Gigabyte GTX670

I am really stumped at this point so any help would be really appreciated.

Try using the last VirtualBox at the moment:

4.1.22 (at the moment)

And also install the Extension Pack, that brings support to USB 2.0:
