I'm trying to install Fedora 16 but no matter what I try, somewhere during the installation process I get a black screen then I get stuck. The exact time I get the black screen is random.

Some more details: I'm using the Fedora 16 x86-64 live CD. My computer has a i7-950, 12 GB RAM, Gigabyte X58A-UD3R motherboard, an ATI 5870 graphics card (Gigabyte GV-R587UD-1GD Bios F8) and a couple of SATA hard drives.

So far I have tried these kernel options (one at a time) with no success (i.e. I still got a black screen during the installation process):

  • nomodeset
  • acpi=off
  • noapic
  • nolapic
  • noapictimer

Then I tried xdriver=vesa. This time I had another problem. I got these messages and then computer stopped responding:

Starting SYSV: late initscript for live image

Started SYSV: late initscript for live image

Combining xdriver=vesa and nomodeset gave me a black screen again.

Please notice that on the same machine I have installed Win7-64bits with no problem. Few months ago installed Ubuntu 10.10 and had similar problems. However, that time the nomodeset did the trick.

Any ideas?

Have you tried choosing Troubleshooting instead of the Install or Upgrade options from the install DVD? Then choose basic graphics mode.
