I need to update the firmware on my Sandisk Ultra SSD drive. The manufacturer provides a bootable ISO image (it has Linus in there). My machine does not have a CD drive. How can I write the .iso image to a USB stick so that it is bootable, using Fedora 17?
well you can try
dd if=name-XXX.iso of=/dev/sdX
Make sure to use /dev/sdX and not /dev/sdX1.
Or you can try it with unetbootin
It just depend on your iso image the above process (dd'ing) is generic and works with almost all iso images
The process @Akshay showed is correct and might work but also might not...
In fact only some of the iso images are suitable to be written into an USB with the dd command. Such iso image file goes under the name of hybrid image

A more recent example is the release of hybrid ISO files that can be booted or started from both BD or DVD and USB flash drive devices when the image is written to any of these storage devices.
If using the dd command is not working you may try to use the unetbootin utility to write the iso image to your usb stick.
Simply install it with yum
sudo yum install unetbootin -y
and run it.

blah even today, the way unetbootin, Rufus and/or the rest behave in very different ways - the way that they handle the (ISO) images; just a note, to: always be careful, on what method is used to create the (bootable) media - funny how it isn't 'standardized', but -then- how could it be..:)
