Hi,

I am aware that this question is offtopic and not necessarily related/limited to Fedora. So, moderators, feel free to delete.

I'd like to backup some of my daily work using mega's client to upload files into cloud. I know, that the sync clients are open source, still I was wondering if they are peer-reviewed and can be considered safe? Safe in terms of not leaking any data to third parties, and doing only what the client is supposed to do on my Fedora system.

Thanks

This really isn’t the right lace to ask for this. Have a go at security.stackexchange.com.

Do you get the source code? As far as I can tell no. So you can't check and shouldn't rely on it. It is provided by a company "for free", i.e. you don't have to pay with your money, right? How should a company work in capitalism without profit? You have to assume they are analyzing your data and behavior and share this information with others. So even if the client is safe and respecting your privacy, you can never know whether the server is.

You may want to try owncloud instead. It's free software and known to work.

Some source code is here: https://github.com/meganz/ Source code of the sync client is here: https://github.com/meganz/MEGAsync

How they make their money? They sell packages for higher storage capacity or higher bandwidth - just like Dropbox. It's wrong to believe that profit gain and open-source do not combine well!

You may be right regarding server safety but at least all data is encrypted locally before upload. That is already pretty good.

Owncloud would be nice but is totally different. I would have to provide the server infrastructure which I can't afford
