How to assign a keyboard shortcut to a mouse button?

I am looking for a way to assign a keyboard shortcut to a mouse click event on a specific button.

In particular, I'd like to have the thumb button on my mouse tied to the "Meta" keyboard key, so I can enter and exit GNOME Shell's Overview with a single mouse click
