Firefox 9.0.1 won't open links from external apps, says already running.

enter the root password

once you have root access type "ps -A" look for the process in the list titled "Firefox" in the right column. in the left column will be a corresponding number (this is the process ID number)

next type "kill ####" (#### is the process ID number you found)

this will completely shut down Firefox and you can open a new browser again.

I haven't found another work around besides this.

For me the relentless "Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system." problem was a v9.0.1 deal breaker. It persisted regardless of the many methods found on the Internet which I employed in trying to solve the issue. My ultimate solution was to first uninstall v9.0.1 and then to simply download Firefox version 3.6.27 from http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all-older.html for my OS which is Ubuntu, manually install it and the problem was mercifully GONE. I still have all my bookmarks and add-ons working but I do miss the v9.0.1 "Paste and go" which was about the only improvement I found in v9.0.1 anyway.
