Great Virtual machine software?

asked 2016-03-19 13:08:59 -0600

Hi, I want to run virtual machines on Linux but I can't seem to find one that works and is enough to run VMs.

I first tried Boxes but they don't allow me to add a hard drive and the machine deletes after a shutdown.

I tried VirtualBox then but I kept on getting the kernel errors.

I tried VMware Player and Workstation 11 but the program didn't run at all (described mere here: )

Do you have any reconsiderations for any simple, working virtual machine software that will let me to install Windows ME?

Boxes works just fine. When creating the vm you define the max hard disk space (disk grows as you start occupying the space) and RAM size. The vm will only be deleted if you just start a live image and don't install a system.

One thing I am really curious about: Why Windows ME? MS support ended 2003. Even it's successor WinXP is end-of-life.

Virtualbox works fine on Linux. All to need to do is to add the kernel-devel and Kernel-headers After every kernel update you can recompile the drivers with a simple command, usually: /sbin/rcvboxdrv setup if you use the rpm from Virtualbox website.

Easy and clean

And if you go with the non-free but extremely convenient release from Oracle's repository, all you need is dkms installed before you install VirtualBox. Works great but is not free (free as in freedom)

how to get them

sudo dnf install dkms kernel-devel, then restart, then setup virtualbox repo by copying .repo file to /etc/yum.repos.d/ and then run sudo dnf upgrade && sudo dnf install VirtualBox-5.0. Done.
