Try to identify the processe(s) that make up the usage with top -o %MEM -n 1. Best run this command when the memory has a high usage.

It's hard to make out just what's happening because the columns don't really line up properly. However, it looks like Firefox is the biggest user of memory, but it's only using 4.3%. Judging from what I can see, you're using Gnome, and although it's a known memory hog, it shouldn't be using up that much. I'm using Xfce, and top reports this: Tasks: 185 total, 1 running, 184 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie which is far fewer processes than you have running. Please run free -h and put the response in a comment so we can get a better look at what's going on.

For some reason, that's not displaying right unless I pretend to edit it. It looks like you've only got 346 Meg of memory free, but you're only using 2.5 G of swap.

It looks like you're running Wayland. I've had trouble with it using too much memory. I would try using the regular X server and see if it clears up the memory problem.
