I am trying to upgrade two Fedora 21 boxes to Fedora 23. Both use the KDE spin. The first upgrade went relatively smoothly but the second has stalled.

The system was fully updated to the last versions of Fedora 21 packages prior to attempting the upgrade and had been booted multiple times with the active kernel.

dnf system-upgrade download --releasever=23

I completed this step without incident. There were no dependency problems with the second machine and everything seemed to complete successfully. The download completed with the expected message telling me how to reboot to trigger the upgrade of the system.

dnf system-upgrade reboot

The system booted fine and the upgrade was initiated. The screen showed 'Starting system upgrade. This may take a while.' at the top left of the graphical boot screen and as the final message on the screen showing the console output. Messages prior to this one on the console output all show green 'OK's although it is possible that I missed something which scrolled off the screen.

Nothing further has happened in at least the last 8 hours or so which is clearly much too long. (Certainly the first, slower machine took nothing like this long.)

The machine uses grub in EFI mode to boot, uses the default boot theme and WIFI for net access. The machine is very, very close to using default configuration for almost everything. (It is not my machine - I just do the admin.) In fact, it is much closer to default than the first one I upgraded.

Could somebody suggest the best way to proceed at this point?

I apologise if I've asked this question twice. I cannot quite tell but I had problems registering. (It claims my email address is already being used by somebody else!) It is possible I've submitted it twice, but I'm not sure how to tell for sure as I can't check by looking at a complete list of questions since mine is (or are) not yet accepted pending moderation.

Welcome to ask.fedora. If it says your email address is already in use, that means that you've already registered. And, as a moderator, I took care of the double posting. Don't worry about it, this kind of thing happens all the time.

Thanks. I tried to use my ordinary FedoraID to register or login here but if I try to login it insists I register, whereas if I try to register, it says my email is already in use. In the end, I used my Wordpress ID instead just to keep it happy. Thanks for deleting my duplicate post. (Probably especially annoying if it happens all the time!)

Not especially, unless somebody duplicates an old post just to bring it to the top of the list. Mostly, it's new members who don't realize that their posts are moderated. (I'd like to have a click-through notice when a post gets moderated so that members will know why they don't show up right away, but I don't think the software can handle that.)
