[Solved] Proprietary ATI drivers (Catalyst) don't work on Fedora 16?

I just used preupgrade to update my computer to Fedora 16. After installation of Fedora 16, X would segfault upon boot and I'd have a hung computer with a black screen. When the computer is rebooted I would get a command line screen as the ATI drivers would have been blacklisted.

I uninstalled the proprietary drivers and the computer boots fine now. But the free drivers are nowhere as good as the one from ATI's site. Am I doing something wrong here? If not, does anyone know when updates are expected from ATI?

please check rpmfusion now have fglrx (Catalyst) packages for Fedora 16.

The Catalyst drivers are now supported by Fedora a few days ago, because they are not free you can find in rpmfusion but rpmfusion does not have fglrx anymore... now are called Catalyst packages for Fedora 16.

sudo yum search catalyst

or search catalyst in packetkit...

they are two akmod and kmod -> http://ask.fedoraproject.org/question/315/what-is-the-difference-between-an-akmod-and-kmod

The Catalyst drivers are not supported by Fedora, as they are non-free. ATI is slow to update its drivers to work with the latest kernels. Currently, rpmfusion does not have fglrx (Catalyst) packages for Fedora 16.

I've been using the free drivers for a few years now, and find they work well. If you have specific problems with the free drivers, please file bug reports so that the developers know what needs to be fixed to get the drivers to the same (or better!) standard of performance as ATI's drivers.

If you want ATI to release drivers for newer kernels, please tell them! The forums at phoronix.com and fedoraforum.org are probably the best place to get specific help with proprietary graphics drivers.

Dear all,

I'm also finding problems with the free drivers - battery life on my laptop is seriously reduced, and the fan is going nuts (I guess the open driver has power-management issues, but I'm no expert)

Is there any way to get the driver to calm down? :-)
