I'd like to autostart Skype in my fedora 16 when it boots. I did not find any option suitable for this task in the program.
Maybe a cronjob with a simple test may do the trick or maybe there are gnome plugins to do similar tasks out there. Any idea?
I also know /etc/rc.local file is no longer there but if created will work as usual I guess.

My guess is you want Skype to start when you log in, run
gnome-session-properties
and add it in.
FWIW, rc.local will still work, it is just not included by default. You simply write a script, save it in /etc/rc.local, and make it executable.
Please do not use rc.local, this is meant for system wide services and not session ( desktop ) services.
Drag and drop skype desktop ( usually /usr/share/applications/skype.desktop ) file to /etc/xdg/autostart/ as root for system wide desktop autostart, or ~/.config/autostart/ for per user basis via gnome-session-properties.
