Can't mount SquashFS xz filesystem

I created a SquashFS filesystem with xz compression and I can't mount it on the same system. The error message is something like "can't find superblock".

Is it possible that the kernel can't use any other algorithm than gzip? If this is the case, than why is it an option in mksquahsfs?

check the fedora config parameters to see what compression algorithms are supported. (grep CONFIG_SQUASH)

you might need to use kpartx -a if it is a partitioned file

also, you need to use -o loop, and -t squashfs
