Fedora 23. Gnome. On the bottom left of the desktop is a tab, that leads to an arrow that draws out a short list of some programs I have running (not all, which pretty stupid). What application is this so I can turn it off. I hate the anal need of GUI developers to add 'eye candy' with each release and not provide a tool identify the candy and then disable it. Another example: for a few there were all the chat software hooking into everything. I 'chat' via a browser, like a normal person. I don't use a dedicated app. I can't even expunge 'evolution', one of the most useless e-mail programs I have ever used, from my computer. It has uneeded hooks in the desktop. Look at this mess when trying to remove evolution:

sudo dnf remove evolution-data-server
Dependencies resolved.

Transaction Summary

Why the hell does gnome-shell, the base part, depend on evolution? Stupid. evolution should depend on gnome-shell.

My desktop isn't something just 'found'. It's my working environment. I know what applications I have started.

  1. The thing at the bottom left is a notification area. All desktop environments have a notification area.
  2. evolution-data-server is different from the evolution graphical mail client. It is split out into subpackages so you can remove evolution, but still have portions of the code required by other things.
  3. If you don't prefer gnome, use something else. Fedora has other options.
