Hi all,
I'm currently running F17. When I alt+f2 and type shutdown, the prompt window closes but my PC stays on. Isn't this command supposed to shutdown my box?
I was wondering if I was naively overlooking something... I was also wondering if alt+f2 commands are commonly used, and if so what are some popular ones.

As root you can halt the machine with pm-suspend, and pm-hibernate (hibernate and suspend) if your hotkeys are not working. For shutdown, there is also several options, like "halt", and "shutdown -h now" (halt) - "shutdown -r now" (restart). I don't suggest the init commands, because it won't halt every process, else it kills immediately them. For the hotkeys are mostly means quirks, and ACPI problems, and maybe missing configuration for hotkeys.

shutdown -h now

You can use poweroff command. It even does not require user to be a root/sudoer.
Since years I use:
init 0 for shutdown
init 6 for reboot
This is standard on *BSD systems.
