i upgraded fedora 22 to fedora 23 and now i have some issues when logging in, the login screen disappears and the screen stay's with the gray background i have to press STRG+ALT+F2 to switch to the gnome screen after that it seems to work but the login screen stay's at STRG+ALT+F1. the only thing i did after the upgrade was to downgrade xorg to get the nvidia driver working
This issue fixed in gnome-shell 3.18.3 (in updates-testing).
Fedora 23's gdm is simply broken. I suspect that it does not support some recent Nvidia video cards. In my case I have a PC with GTX 960.
I just test-installed kdm and switched the display manager to kdm, and it works. Yes, I can login with kdm but no way with gdm.
What's the difference between gdm and kdm in Fedora 23 ?
As I said in my previous posting, I was happy running Fedora 22 on the same PC. After clean installing Fedora 23, I can't even login anymore with the default gdm.
The answer is that the gdm of Fedora 23 is simply broken for some recent Nvidia video cards, period.
I have the same problem with Fedora 4.3.4-300.fc23.x86_64 on a Dell XPS 15 with NVidia GM107M (GTX 960M rev a2) and Gnome 3.18.3. My workaround: press power button shortly when screen is gray, wait about 2-3 seconds until power is off, press power button again. Within another 2-3 seconds I have the login screen and everything works as expected. Fedora 22 did not show this behavior.

i use fresh install, and encountered this situation too.
The login screen staying at TTY1 is normal; it continues to run so other users could log in on TTY3, TTY4, etc while you are occupying TTY2. Not switching on login is a problem - check your journal for clues.
I have a PC with Nvidia GTX 960 graphics card and the same issue. I suspect it has to do with the default gdm support for GTX 960 ? After clean installing Fedora 23 with the default Gnome Live DVD, I can't login. gdm is simply broken.
Fedora 22 was not this bad, I suspect they changed something related to video card support in Fedora 23. My big mistake was to install Fedora 23 - I was running Fedora 22 happy on the same PC.
I have the same problem with a fresh install. It boots but when I try to login, it freezes in a blank screen. It happens with Gnome. Xfce works normally.
