How do I get Fedora 22 to recognize my sound devices' existence?

I just installed Fedora 22 and am trying to use my headphones, but the computer refuses to recognize that it exists. It doesn't recognize the computer's speakers, either. I already tried turning them on through Settings, but neither shows up on the list of devices.

They're regular (non-USB) headphones, plugged into a Lenovo X201.

As it turns out, I was using the root account for everything, which somehow broke the system. So I solved the problem by creating a main work account for myself, which solves the problem.

Now I'm curious as to how root access breaks audio access.

Also, kudos to #fedora on Freenode for helping me out with this.

thanks for following up! I'm curious too, but not enough to dig into it; at the end of the day, it's a thing that should not be run as root that doesn't work when run as root.

Root access has a different path statement than does a regular user.

A regular user, compared to root, has access to a wider range of programs.
