I can't find any plugin or protocol for Skype in Empathy. But after getting all the chat protocols integrated in Empathy, I don't feel like switching in Skype separately. Can there be any means with which I can use full Skype functionality (through my Skype account) via Empathy ?

No. Skype is a proprietary protocol and developers of Skype have taken both technical and legal restraints to avoid their protocol getting reverse engineered. There is a Pidgin plugin however that still requires Skype to be running in parallel.

The extension lets you set status messages only iirc. You can't use anything other than skype for the actual communication.

True. Without passing judgement, if you use proprietary protocols, they tend to bring this sort of issues.
