When I try to define the default applications for Web, Email, Calendar, ... in Gnome (Fedora 22), I can select only from a given list of programs. How can I extend that list to programs that are not yet listed there but installed on my system?

Copy a .desktop file somewhere? Where is that somewhere?

Basically Gnome loads list of programs from ~/.local/share/applications/ and /usr/share/applications . Note that if .desktop file syntax is wrong your program won't show up in Gnome launcher. Also, after you change .desktop file you'll probably need to restart gnome shell with Alt+F2 , type r and hit enter.

/usr/share/applications is system wide folder while ~/.local/share/applications is just for your user account.

OK, Thanks. I guess I have to work on the syntax. I just placed start-tor-browser.desktop there but looks like this is not a "regular" .desktop file.

Have you tried alacarte.noarch (menu editor for gnome) for creating your shortcut/launcher?

use desktop-file-validate to check your desktop file syntax.

@masterroman: Interesting that you mention alacarte. I have a file called alacarte-made.desktop in ~/.local/share/applications and had no clue where this is coming from...Looks like I used alacarte before. Thanks!
