I have installed all the brother files as indicated on Brother website as well as some others from help forums etc. Printer config can find printer and installs it as default printer. I can ping printer from laptop and find it by web browser but l am unable to print. No error messages, print request vanishes into the ether. It worked fine under previous install of Fedora 20.

If you're doing your printing from a web browser, I'd just register it with Google Cloud Print and print from Chrome. Easy, no messing with drivers, plus lets you print from other devices/computers and share it with others if you need to.

Have you tried using the package

system-config-printer.x86_64

I've found the Gnome printer manager to be finicky.
