How can I change languages using alt + shif?

I installed gnome tweak tools like the online guides suggested but under typing I do not see Modifiers-only input sources

All I see is this:

If you want to define shortcuts for changing your keyboard layout you can do that via Settings.

Open up Settings > Keyboard > Shortcuts

and you'll see section "Typing" where you can define your keyboard shortcuts for changing keyboard layouts.

A lot of key combinations work with that. Alt + shift is not one that works.

Maybe because they're "meta keys" and they need another key in the combination. For example: <shift> + <alt> + <n> or whatever. :-/

Is there a way to get around that restriction? I know that if I had selected Alt + shift as the key combination when installing the OS that would have worked.

You can set it directly with:

gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings switch-input-source "['<Alt>Shift_L']"

or use dconf editor to change org>gnome>desktop>vm>keybindings> switch-input-source option.

Above mentioned command will set it to alt+ left shift.

If you want to set shortcut to cycle back through layouts you'll need to set option switch-input-source-backward. Example:

gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings switch-input-source-backward "['<Alt><Control>Shift_L']"

will set shortcut to Ctrl+Alt+shift.
