Fedora 22 server installation doesn't boot from USB

asked 2015-08-23 05:35:16 -0600

Hello I'm trying to install fedora and it's nearly impossible because it doesn't boot.

I'm doing the bootable USB from Windows and tryied the following methods:

-Manually copying the files to the usb and marking it as active with diskpart. -Using liveusb-creator provided by fedora. -Using Unetbootin. -And using Universal USB installer.

I also tried with differents kind of ISOS i tried with netinstall and i had allways the same error Operative system not found.

I don't know if this its happening because I got an 8 years old pc with BIOS and not UEFI or why... Can someone help me?

Does this happens only with fedora 22 server? Have you tried any other distro?

Follow the instructions at to create the media.

Copying the files is never expected to work. Unetbootin and the other universal writers that operate the way @phorneker described are never expected to work. The fedora installer will sometimes work, but it doesn't do direct writing on Windows systems, so it isn't in the guide. Follow the guide, and you'll be fine.

I have had success with unetbootin with some distributions (including Fedora).

First, can your PC boot from a USB device? Usually, you will need to press a function key at powerup to get to the system's boot menu. On my laptop, a HP Compaq 8510p, I press F9 to get the boot menu.

If this is not possible, then can you get into the BIOS and check the boot settings to see if you can boot from a USB device? Given that your machine is of 2007 heritage, you should be able to boot from a USB device.

Second, to create a bootable USB flash drive, the flash drive needs to be formatted with a single FAT32 partition. unetbootin creates SYSLINUX (the kernel designed to boot from FAT16 and FAT32 partitions), a compressed virtual hard disk containing the software needed to run and/or install Linux, in this case Fedora 22 Server, and supporting files that are needed for the boot process.

Could you please supply the make and model of your PC, and as much technical information about your system as possible to make it easier to answer this question?
