I'm not sure just what that second command did, unless there's a user on your system named user_name. And, I'm astonished that passwd didn't object to the proposed password as being far too simple. Does the command su still work?

You didn't follow the commands exactly as far as I can see. In techmint tutorial they say

Create an User for Virtualbox as:

usermod -G vboxusers -a user_name

passwd user_name

except that this is wrong, I mean, with usermod -G vboxusers -a user_name you don't create a new user but you add your user (existing user) to vboxusers group and there is no need to execute the second command passwd. You didn't execute this command, but instead usermod -a -G vboxusers root.admin , what is this root.admin ? Also, what is the exact problem you have right now? Can you login to the system?
