Fast search in file dialogs in Fedora 22?

In the past it used to be possible to scroll fast in a files dialog (e.g. after File -> Load...) by typing the first letters of the file or directory.

For example, if want to open a file and you are in /, you can type (fast) 'ho + enter' to go to home and later my+enter to go to mydir.

This feature doesn't work in Fedora 22, probable it has to do with Gnome but please let me know if it works for you or how to activate this feature.

You should be sure you mention your desktop environment - Linux doesn't have a uniform desktop that everyone uses. It's what why love about Linux. As to Gnome3 (the default in F22), just hit "meta" and start typing. It's actually a lot smarter than you think :)

@bit4man Gnome 3.16 in Fedora 22, I am not talking about the "desktop search", I am talking about "fast scroll by typing" in an Open dialog. For example go to gedit -> Open -> start typing to scroll fast across the files and directories.

~~@bit4man he is talking about the autocomplete of directory and file names. Used to be able to start typing the name of the file or directory and it shows. Now, it goes straight to file search; no name completion.~~ It seems he has to pick the directory to start in, then ctrl+l.

@NuuN, that is right, and if I have to go through several directories I have to repeat the process many times. Before I could type (from /) us + enter + in + enter + boo + enter and be in /usr/include/boost in a snap. Also I found that I can do this typing Control+L 3 times (yes 3 times), type the first letter and press enter, and do that again. (It is annoying but it is better than grabbing the mouse and scroll)

To use auto-complete in the location box in Nautilus (Files), hit Control+L, start typing, and then hit Tab (not Return)

eg: Control+L, "/ho" Tab "/my" Tab

Ok, thanks. First, I was talking about the (Gnome) "Open" dialogs. Second, yes, you can do that but only one level at a time (you have to press enter to see the directories you are transversing). Thank for the tip anyway.
