How do I stop/disable NetworkManager connecting to every 5 minutes?

I noticed a connection every 5 minutes to . I found that the connection was being made by NetworkManager and an internet search makes me think it is likely a probe to check that there is still internet connectivity. (See e.g. ). I would prefer this to be stopped/disabled since this allows someone able to observe traffic upstream (and obviously itself although this is not my concern) to work out when my computer is switched on and therefore when I am in my house or not.

If disabling this is not possible then I would like to know if I can at least change the URL. Maybe the person who can answer this question can answer at the same time mine as well.

This connectivity check is done by NetworkManager and it is configure on

You can edit this file and change the uri field if you like to set another domain to verify you need to have a hotspot.txt file or a file that will return "OK".

If you want to disable it you can set uri with no value that will disabled it.

Thank you very much. I set the uri to have no value i.e. "uri=" and after rebooting the computer it doesn't connect to every 5 minutes any more. I presume restarting NetworkManager would also work though I didn't do this. Thanks!

Is there any reason why the check occurs in the first place? How is the information used if the server returns OK?

The reason for this check is to validate that your network connection works, for instance sometimes you join a wifi network but it does not connect to the internet only to local network, you can see that when your wifi icon is change to a question mark on Gnome3. Hope that explain it.

Thank you very much for the explanation. Apart from the icon, is there any drawback by removing the URL? Could a program check this status?

As far as I know. there is not drawback.
