Not able to connect to ethernet at college

asked 2015-06-22 21:45:48 -0600

Plugging into my ethernet at home is just fine, as is the wifi, but at my college it seems that there is a linux download I need to get, but only for Ubuntu. Of course I can't remember exactly what it is, but I'm new to Fedora and wondered if there was any sort of work around or beginning steps that will allow me to actually use my laptop at school. I expect some questions to further diagnose the issue, but I appreciate any help given.

No underestand what is your issue, you connect to your ethernet connection on your school and do not work, do you see if your nic get the lights on the connector? do you know if they have dhcp?

Your college may require your to use a PROXY. That's not Ubuntu specific. They should have information about the proxy server settings for Firefox etc. and you can use that. This answer can help you in how to do that globally for all users:

What is the information or the download that they provided for Ubuntu?

Welcome to ask.fedora. If you can connect to the Internet properly at home via ethernet, your computer's hardware and software are working properly. If it can't connect at school, you need to find out from your college's IT people how to configure your connection. And, if you need to use a proxy, as bit4man suggested, the settings aren't OS or distro specific. Good luck with getting your connection working, and let us know if you need help following whatever instructions you get.

Also note that it could be 802.1X authentication.
