From rpmfusion, smplayer have smtube that let you watch and save youtube videos

To download video or just sound , clipgrab from RPMFusion do the work very well

Have you tried youtube-dl ? It is small command line utility for downloading videos from youtube.

With youtube-dl you don't even need mp3 codecs because you download a video as a webm audio which is playable by rhythmbox as well. Just rever to the youtube-dl documentation on the specific terminal commands to be used.
