Did you have this problem before you installed the third party graphics drivers?

I do face this issue sometimes in my DELL Inspiron N5010 Laptop.

It happens for me when I change the brightness.

straight from the user guide....

▲ To connect a VGA display device, connect t he device cable to the external monitor port. Press fn + f4 to switch the image between the disp lay devices connected to the computer. NOTE: Pressing fn + f4 allows you to switch between settings. You can toggle between a laptop panel, an external display in combination with the laptop panel, or one of the external monitors. You also can attach external monitors to both the DisplayPort and the VGA ports, but only one external display can be active at a time

I know how to connect and configure displays Warren, my lid is closed (display off) and I have connected first external monitor to HDMI and second to VGA port, both are active and working simultaneously. Below does not apply to me as I have no DisplayPort only VGA and HDMI.
