black screen on dell dockingstation

asked 2015-04-02 10:23:03 -0600

I'm running a dell e5540 with F20 and an external screen Samsung U28D590D.

Screenresolution 3840x2160 works when using the internal hdmi-connector, xrandr says:

HDMI2 connected primary 3840x2160+1920+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 608mm x 345mm

  • 3840x2160 30.00*+ 25.00 24.00 29.97 23.98
  • 2560x1440 59.95

when using the DVI-connector on the dockingstation, xrandr says: Screenresolution 3840x2160 makes black screen, desktop extends, primary screen is laptop

DP1-1 connected 3840x2160+1920+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 608mm x 345mm

  • 3840x2160 30.00* + 25.00 24.00 29.97 23.98
  • 2560x1440 59.95

when using the display-port: Screenresolution 3840x2160 makes black screen, desktop extends, primary screen is laptop

DP1-2 connected 3840x2160+1920+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 607mm x 345mm

  • 3840x2160 60.00*+
  • 2560x1440 59.95

Make sure you are using new and latest display drivers. You can also try this one method that is- Turn the computer off. Power on the computer. When you see the Dell logo appear on the screen, press the F8 key until you see the Windows Advanced Boot Menu.Using the Up or Down arrow keys, highlight Enable VGA Mode.Check if the video is seen in this mode of Microsoft Windows. Get more further details and multiple solutions in Dell Latitude E5540 Manual.Good Luck.
