I recently got a Dell Precision 3800 which comes with the integrated Intel graphics and an Nvidia Quadro. When I plug in a DisplayPort monitor the computer freezes up, stops responding, and I have to hold the power button down to restart it.

I tried installing the Nvidia binary drivers but that just resulted in gnome-shell not starting up because then the Intel graphics didn't have 3D acceleration. So I took those back out.

I would like to be able to use an external monitor with this laptop.

Does anyone know more about this problem? Is there a solution?
