After updating, I rebooted and typed the passphrase of my encrypted hard drive. I was prompted to enter the passphrase again. I did this -twice- and the ended up in a console-like looking screen saying "emergency mode". I rebooted once again and pressed ESC to see what was happening. Now it is asking for my root password and then for my HDD passphrase. After that I can log in with my user password. Now it asks for passwords in varying order and for various times and doesn't manage to completely boot! Reinstalling everything is the easy way out (I would appreciate a link to a guide on doing this since \, \boot, \root, swap have different partitions), but I really want to know what happened. It can't be possible that after an update my system is left useless.

I would bet on systemd. If you are able to reach running system use "yum history" and check what was update recently. Try to revert.
