Greetings,

I am having a problem with browsers loading facebook which seems to be a common issue for many users since I have found various questions in all sorts of linux forums about this. I have tried to fix this issue in various ways which were offered throughout the forums.

I have tried disabling IPv6 using sysctl from the terminal and I have tried downloading and upgrading the nss-softokn and the nss-softokn-freebl applications which seem to have resolved the problem for some users but neither of those things have helped me. I have tried installing some flash plugin on Chrome as well.

Basically, the problem is that I open facebook and the chat never shows up, nor can I read any messages or notifications. It got even worse when it stopped loading at all (probably after trying some of the fixes I have read in forums). I tried pinging it from the terminal and it has no problem.

I would be grateful for a working fix to this problem. I could show some log files as well if you tell me which exactly to show and how since I am quite new to Linux and Fedora in particular.

You can't install Flash for Chrome as the latest version of Chrome doesn't support NPAPI plugins and Chrome ships its own version of flash plugin. So you are able to browse Facebook just fine but not able to use chat or messages feature. Can you try opening a new incognito tab from menu or Ctrl+Shift+T and try to use Facebook from there? Are you on F21 workstation? What version of Chrome do you have?

Well, actually this time facebook doesn't load at all. It is just loading until it finally times out.

That happens in the incognito tab as well.

Yes, I am on F21 Workstation and my chrome version (according to the package installed) is google-chrome-stable-39.0.2171.95-1.x86_64

Just confirming - you've tried both Firefox and Epiphany and they fail to load Facebook too?

Yes, sadly it doesn't load on Firefox, Chrome nor Epiphany. I have tried several other browsers such as Opera and Chromium but the result is the same.

Here is the output error when trying to load it:

Oops! Unable to display this website. The site at “https://www.facebook.com/” seems to be unavailable. The precise error was:

Message Corrupt

It may be temporarily unavailable or moved to a new address. You may wish to verify that your internet connection is working correctly.

Greetings,

Thankfully I finally found a working solution to this problem. The problem was from the MTU in my network configuration.

I opened /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts and from there I manually reconfigured my configuration file for my wireless network (The problem to some may be from the network adapter configuration but mine was from the wireless configuration). From there I added the line MTU="1454" at the end of the file ifcfg-(wireless connection name) and it worked. Note that the number might be different for other users.

I found the necessary info from this forum post: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/250228 Answer #10
