Hi I have a couple of problematic external hdd's. Both of them are telling me they cannot be opened with: fdisk -l I tried formatting them with dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdg bs=1M and it took several days for them to complete. But I still cannot use the disk with the error above

Can anyone help me save these disks?

Best Regards Aubrey.

Those errors suggest to me drive problems - smartctl -a /dev/sdg might help - but the commands you have cited don't do anything besides write zeroes to the disk, destroying any partitioning or filesystems. Typically "formatting" refers to creating a filesysystem, which you don't demonstrate attempting.

Bad blocks?

try:

badblocks -w -e -s ...

or

mke2fs -c -c ...

read man pages carefully
