I am having some trouble installing Gnome shell extensions on a friend's laptop; HP Pavillion 5000. Maybe I am just not understanding. I have Fedy installed and gnome-tweak-tool. I am following the instructions in ( ) which i found very helpful and informative. First, I went to and it says to change the switch to "on." I see no switch....The sites all say "If it doesn't install automatically you can install manually" and gives a link. I cant figure out how they are supposed to install automatically. I clicked on everything on the pages. SO, I downloaded some third party extensions like ApplicationsMenu, DashtoDock, NetSpeed and followed the instructions. I tried to manually install (DashtoDock) and extract to ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions/ where it says it cannot create the directory {unzip \ -d ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions/} I have looked over some other posts on gnome shell extensions and I think it i am just more confused. can someone help? Oh, and I have xz installed but still cannot seem to extract an xz tarball.

Are you using Firefox at ? It's always worked for me just to go there in firefox; no fedy, no fedorautils, no sketchy third party repos.

If you don't see a switch, it's possible that the extension isn't compatible with your version of gnome-shell. You'll have to check, though. Also, try: mkdir ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions first to see if this directory exists, and then run the unzip command etc. (this is a general linux command line issue, not specific to the extensions or Fedora).

For gnome shell extensions to be installed : the website must detect a running copy of gnome on your Computer. if you are ussing Firefox then there is a message that says " no running copy of gnome detected ". you just need to unblock the extension. then you can see all the switches for the extension when you open them. Sometimes when the page is not properly loaded because of slow internet , the switches may not get loaded, so try reloading the page
