Why don't people use their votes in here?

I think psychologically the system here prevents voting. Long time Fedora user, new ask.fedora member. Some posts require >100 somethings to vote, some only require >10. Trying to vote and being rejected with a big red dialog isn't rewarding and will probably prevent me from trying again for quite some time. It's an option I probably won't try again because it isn't clear when you actually have the option to exercise that right. As such, it will be a feature that I simply discover later some day when I think I have the ability. If that intuition is too soon, I will perhaps push trying to vote again even further.

I hope you can see how the policy around voting is what's causing the issue.

To me it looks like that the idea of what is worth voting differs from other platforms. Given the answers already provided here voting might be more seen as a reward to exceptional answers and not a reward for answers which still help, but are not exceptional.

This would be in contrast to other platforms where you get an upvote for a helpful answer - if you are exceptional you have no further benefit, though.

However, this is a presumption - but it could be interesting to collect more data to see if that is indeed the real reason. It would reflect my personal experience at least. Another question would be which approach is better - but I guess that's up to the individual.

Me, I personally don't vote that much compared to other people. I think really good answers deserve votes. When I look at an answer, it sometimes doesn't work, so a good alternative would be useful. A good explanation would also help. Of course, I try to make my answer as good as possible so that I can help the person (and partially so I gain karma). Karma, is, I think, a "reward" for helping a person.

So, if an answer doesn't help, don't vote at all. If it does really help, consider giving it an upvote, and if you can and want to, mark it as correct. I'm not sure why other people don't vote, but I don't vote often because the answer is not detailed enough and describes why it works. An example: a one line answer which works , but doesn't include other options or resources, I wouldn't vote at all. On the other hand, something which is obviously wrong, insecure or doesn't make sense would get downvoted. The other, thorough (as @randomuser said) would get upvoted and marked as correct. Example: https://ask.fedoraproject.org/en/question/9111/sticky-what-plugins-do-i-need-to-install-to-watch-movies-and-listen-to-music/ is concise and clear, easy to do, and well explained. It also works. So, upvote that one! :)
