How to mount ISO images as LiveCD?

asked 2014-08-03 09:36:00 -0600

I found a lot of information on mounting ISO images to particular folders like /mnt/iso, etc. but I couldn't find any information on how to mount ISO images as cdrom. So it behaves as if I inserted a LiveCD through the optical disk in my system.

One of the use cases would be to use the mounted LiveCD for installation in VirtualBox.

Doesn't virtualbox allow you to boot an iso, or assign an image to the virtual cdrom? I don't understand the use case.

@randomuser@hello Yes, I can add any ISO in VirtualBox. I was just curious if ISO can be mounted as LiveCDs.

Not that I know of, because I think they behave the same way. For example, you insert a disc; disc=/dev/cdrom; /dev/cdrom gets mounted /mnt/CD; computer runs off of CD temporarily. That said, iso=/home/iso.iso; /home/iso.iso gets mounted to /mnt/CD; computer runs off of ISO temporarily. Essentially, it is the same concept, but portrayed in a different way. :)

As randomuser said, you don't have to mount the ISO to the host machine to install it in a virtual machine. You can make the virtualbox-> new virtual machine->cdrom to look at the ISO image in the host machine!
