Audio balance problem through headphone jack

I have a ThinkPad T440 with Fedora 20. Sound through the speakers works just fine. If I plug in headphones to the combination headphone/microphone jack, however, the sound is distorted. There is an echo, the balance is completely wrong, and it generally sounds garbled. This is true even if I use earbuds that have a microphone.

If I go into the sound settings and adjust the output to only the left or right channel, then the distortion disappears, but of course then I'm only getting one channel. The headphones worked just fine with Windows, although I no longer have that installed.
