how to remove user password?

This post is a wiki. Anyone with karma >750 is welcome to improve it.

So, my user didn't have password (from installation) until now when i needed to set a password for ssh. But now, when i try to remove the password by leaving the now password empty in passwd i get an error BAD PASSWORD: The password is shorter than 8 characters.

So, is there any way to bypass that restriction and completely remove the password?

passwd -d your_username

I tried changing Password Policies ext. and nothing helped - but forgot to check maybe the command itself (passwd) have the option:-)
