Missing Files display upon search
When go to Files I can see the File display area. As soon as I put anything into the search field, it disappears. Is that normal? How do I do a search?

The search field in the Files application will dynamically update the display area with results based on the contents of the search field. So, if you type "x," and nothing in your current location (or its subdirectories) matches that value, the display area will be empty.
Does that make sense? Try observing the display area prior to entering text into the search field, and then type the name of an object you see into the search field. You should see that only that object is now displayed in the display area, since the search field narrows your potential results to only that object (or multiple if the search term is common to all of them).
Can you provide a screenshot of what you're talking about? You can use the fpaste
command (check out the man page for usage) and place the URL here. Avoid posting anything personally identifiable!
I can't take a screen shot, but just imagine a blank screen with nothing but the background design. If I start with a blank screen, open "files" then "files" is the only thing on the screen. If I put anythng into the search field, "files" disappears and the screen is blank again.
