I am trying to install fedora 20 on this optiplex 740. i believe it used to be a server // motherboard is and athlon dual core processor 5000b 2.61 ghz 1.87 gb ram it has no cd player or floppy. I want to put this os and not dual boot!! Is this possible? // i downloaded the iso and put it on a usb, but I have to open it from windows , and also it says its a 40 day trial version so where is the free os?... it will not boot and install from the usb and overwrite windows.

Can you tell us where you downloaded the Fedora that claims to be a 40 day trial version? That's absolutely not something provided by the Fedora Project, and unless there's some misunderstanding on your part, this should really be investigated.

@dcastoral - can you provide a screenshot of the trial version warning, please?

I've tried, but am unable to get there again...I am now trying to download directly to that pc (740) is this a wise choice?

Here's a link from the Feodra wiki on creating a USB bootable installation:

% removed reference to UnetBootin as suggested.

I would not recommend unetbootin. The instructions you've linked to explicitly advise against it.

I have used the information on the how-to-create-and-use-live-usb link from Mordoc and have successfully loaded fedora 20 onto that machine AND a toshiba laptop Thank you so much for the quick reply and direct information.... now i will have to get used to this new os!!!

Can you please mark Mordoc's answer as correct, and comment underneath instead of posting a new answer? Glad you got it working, but breaking the Q&A format gets confusing.
