Karma reflects the value of your contribution to this community. The higher is your karma, the more rights you have on this site. When someone up-vote your question or answer you gain +10 karma points. When someone accept your answer as the correct one, you gain +15 karma.
Down-voting might cost you karma, but you should consider doing so for incorrect or clearly detrimental questions and answers. Down-voting costs karma on both of you (and the down-voter). -10 or/and -5 points.
