Of course the best debugger is indeed gdb, especially when used under Emacs. There's a lot to learn but the tool is really powerfull. There are also graphical frontends for gdb such as ddd or insight.

If you looking for something simple and elegant which doesn't take a lot to learn, I would recommend nemiver.

There's no way to answer that question without knowing more. However, have you looked at DDD? It's available in Fedora, and it presents a frontend to gdb that you might be able to understand.
