Hi,

I've been trying to figure out how to reset my password and have gone through number of posts to try and solve this. But when I boot and press 'e' to start up the grub root menu, I don't see a kernel line that I can edit to go into single user mode.
The lines I see are:

     setparams 'Fedora'
     load_video
     set gfxpayload=keep
     insmod gzio
     insmod part_msdos

The root menu before this just has the options for 'Fedora' and 'Advanced options for Fedora'. I also can't use the 'passwd' command in the grub command line, although 'password' works but I couldn't reset it successfully. I don't remember ever even entering a password when I installed this. I also tried CTRL+ALT+F2, and typed 'root', and a blank password, and it still didn't work.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I've updated the content on this wiki page recently to add instructions about using GRUB2 (which the current default boot loader) https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/How_to_reset_a_root_password#Using_GRUB2 GRUB2 is what F18 uses by default.

thank you so much!
for some reason, i was able to find the linux line this time. i think i saw another post mentioning this line to edit and i couldn't find it. anyways, i've reset the root password, but when i start fedora it has my computer name as my user name and i typed in the new root password and it still says 'Authentication Failure'. when i reset the root password was it not for this account? i'm having trouble with the fedora sign in screen..

Actually no, the root account is by default a separate account from user accounts.

To login with your user name you need to use the password you set for that user account.

thanks! but actually i never set up this account or any password with it. i think it showed up there by default maybe, but how would i go about retrieving this. there's no option for "forgot your password". could i reset the user name password, as i did with the root password?

Yes, use passwd username e.g. passwd lenkei01.

at least in the fedora sign in screen the user name displays as "First Last" with my first and last name, "Len Kei" i found out how to get the actual username by typing ls /home at the command line. now when i type passwd myusername it updates successfully and i can now log in! just posted the extra step i took in case someone else ran into a similar problem. thanks so much for the help!
