Typing "poker" or "pokerth" for example into the search field of gnome-software does not lead me to what I'm looking for.
But when I type sudo yum search pokerth in my console I do find it.
Is gnome-software supposed to ignore some packages?

Yes. It doesn't index everything yet due to a number of different reasons listed here. Coverage should get better with time for graphical applications.
If there is software out there, that you care about and doesn't show up because of lack of appdata or whatever, you can inform them. Fedora package maintainers are doing this as well. In time, we expect most if not all of the software to comply with these guidelines. It is distribution neutral metadata that users can really find helpful.
It would be helpful if Fedora also added a synaptic manager to install software with, similar to that of Ubuntu or Yast in openSUSE. You can't install new packages with the synaptic package manager in Fedra 20 which is available for install, just in case somebody mentions that. Not sure if things have changed in Fedora 21.

KDE's software tool
apperfinds the program. If you don't use KDE, runsudo dnf install apper.
