F20: How can Empathy status be integrated with the Gnome 3.10 top panel?

I haven't tried it personally you can do the following, to install the extension

mkdir -p ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions/chatstatus@zeten30.gmail.com
cd ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions/chatstatus@zeten30.gmail.com
sudo yum install git
git clone https://github.com/zeten30/chatstatus.git

Restart GNOME Shell by running alt+F2, r and enter. You can control extensions preferences via gnome-shell-extension-prefs

It has been removed with the new system status menu coming along with GNOME Shell 3.10.

I don't think it is a bad idea since in my opinion it has nothing to do in the system status area. Its place should be in the System Tray at the bottom on the screen. Maybe it will come back in a future version of GNOME Shell. For more information about the new design, you can look at this page.

There seems to be an extension called Chat Status that brings back the functionality you are looking for. Unfortunately, it has been removed or rejected (I don't really know but you can look at the page in cache). I found the corresponding github page in case you want to download it and install it from gnome-tweak-tool.
