We installed Fedora 20 x86_64 as a fresh install onto this build:

AMD Sempron 45 Asus Crosshair V Formula Z Motherboard 2x XFX R7850 Graphics Cards w/ Crossfire. 2x2GB GSkill RAM (4GB total)

We installed from an 8GB USB, and are Booting from a 16GB USB.

We are trying to use Fedora because we read it has driver support for the R7850 graphics cards. The AMD drivers do not work, and we already tried it on Xubuntu (which we could load fine). Windows will not install properly from a USB to a USB (we have no hard drive on our rig) and we've spent days trying to get it to work. This leaves Fedora as our last chance.

After booting, everything that is loading (we pressed escape at the logo screen to view a list of events) shows up with a green [OK]. Afterwards, the screen goes completely black with only our cursor in an "I" shape, which will sometimes turn into a pointer when we move it.

From the black screen, we can access a command prompt through ctrl+alt+F2, from there, we can log in (using the username and password specified at install), go root, and seemingly enter commands just fine. Using "startx" to try and get to a graphical desktop takes us there, but, and here is the issue, all of the windows are just boxes of crazy buggy pixels, with a multitude of colors and patterns in lines down them (not straight lines, angled ones). We can move the windows, and the icons to open more windows (Firefox, for example) are perfectly fine. Shadows show up, window transitions show up, but the actual content of the windows is an unrecognizable mess.

We are not familiar with Linux, but we cannot, unfortunately, get Windows 7 or Windows 8 to load from USB, and so we were forced to adopt Linux instead. We need driver support for these graphics cards. If anyone knows of an alternative Linux OS that will run these cards, please let us know so we can avoid dealing with the difficulties of Fedora.

Things we tried before using Fedora 20:

We got Xubuntu to load and work properly from USB, running programs fine, but the graphics cards lack drivers and do not operate properly. AMD's drivers (and this was confirmed by calling their tech support) are still in beta mode and are not guaranteed to work on Linux.

We got windows to load from USB but

When using Fedora Live USB, the SAME THING happens as well., however, it went straight to the graphical desktop and didn't require us to launch the desktop from the command prompt using "startx". The initial failure to load anything within a window prompted us to do a full install, and it doesn't seem to do anything different other than force us to also launch the desktop from the command prompt.

First, try yum update from a root terminal and reboot after. If the issue persists, look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log and journalctl -b for clues.
