I want to backup my PC to an external drive (4TB) currently I have: /dev/sdb (2TB) = /home /dev/sda (1TB) = everything else

I am open to suggestions as to backing up these drives. My requirement is that if my PC died I would be able to restore to two new hard drives exactly how they are now.

Is there any software that will backup an image so that when it restores I will get the same set up I have now?

Dear maramyfriend,

Using no additional software:

  • Boot Fedora in rescue mode from USB or DVD
  • Look in /proc/partitions for devices
  • Plugin external
  • Look in /proc/partitions for the external's partitions
  • Make mountpoint with mkdir /mnt/external
  • Mount external hdd with "mount /dev/sdxx" /mnt/external
  • type: "dump 0f <path to="" external="">/dumpofsda"
  • type: "dump 0f <path to="" external="">/dumpofsdb"
  • type: "umount /mnt/external"
  • reboot
  • Check the "restore" manual page and try the restore using the dry-run option.

You can improve performance by playing with the block size parameter.

If the external has FAT filesystem, check options (B and M) to split the backup in 4G chunks.

Advantage: incremental backups possible Upon restore, you have to manually create partitions and filesystems

Or: download Clonezilla iso and burn CD or install on USB stick. Follow instructions for sda and rerun for sdb

Advantage: Partition info is stored, no manual creation of filesystems and so on Disadvantage: No incrementals, unable to restore to smaller target position

Good luck!
